Discovering the wonders of our Solar System. Images of students learning about the Solar System with their teachers.

Our 6th grade scientists have been embarking on an exciting journey through space as we explore the vast solar system and universe! This unit has been packed with hands-on learning activities that bring the mysteries of planets, moons, stars, and galaxies right into the classroom.

Students not just learning facts—they are investigating the wonders of space through interactive notebooks, fun experiments, and collaborative projects. It’s been thrilling to watch their curiosity ignite as they discover how the planets orbit the sun, the characteristics of each planet, and the incredible scale of the universe beyond.

To keep this excitement alive at home, we encourage parents to become part of their child’s space adventure. By taking a few minutes each night to ask questions about what they’ve learned. Here are some examples to get you started:

  • What are the inner planets, and how are they different from the outer planets?

  • Can you name the planet with the largest rings? What are those rings made of?

  • How does the Earth’s rotation affect day and night?

  • What is a galaxy, and how is our solar system part of one?

  • What causes the different phases of the Moon?

  • Can you name and describe the major phases of the Moon?

  • How long does it take for the Moon to complete one full cycle of phases?

Make it a fun nightly tradition to review their science interactive notebook together. This will help reinforce their knowledge and build confidence for upcoming quizzes and projects.

Thank you for supporting our young astronomer’s journey to understanding our incredible solar system and universe. With your encouragement, their passion for science will continue to soar!

Clear skies and happy learning,
